$25,000 Fisher Family Challenge Grant

The campaign to pass Measure E, a local funding measure to protect teachers and academic programs in the Cabrillo Unified School District, received a generous  from the Fisher family.  Friends of Cabrillo Unified Schools (FOCUS) is the volunteer-led campaign committee supporting the measure.

Ken Fisher is the CEO of Fisher Investments, an independent investment management company that serves Fortune 500 clients, foundations and endowments. He has been in investment management for over a third of a century and is the author of six books.

Underscoring the Fisher family’s commitment to public education and Coastside schools, Ken and his wife Sherri donated $25,000 in the form of a challenge grant to help the campaign reach its fundraising goal.  The challenge grant will only be available until June 8, so FOCUS is calling on Measure E supporters to help raise the $25,000 match as soon as possible.

“Our children received a great education in our local schools with a strong foundation in math, science, reading and writing that helped them succeed in college and in their careers.  Due to ongoing state budget cuts, we know local schools are in need of stable revenue to continue our local tradition of great public education.  That’s why we’re supporting Measure E,” stated Sherri Fisher.

Measure E is on the June 8, 2010 ballot.  It would retain teachers, protect academic programs in math, science, reading and writing, and protect smaller class sizes if it passes with 67% of the vote. Measure E funds go directly to local schools and cannot be taken away by the state.

Measure E’s fiscal safeguards are another reason that hundreds of volunteers are working to pass the measure.  No funds can be used for administrators’ salaries, a senior citizen exemption is available and citizen oversight and annual audits will ensure funds are used for voter-approved programs to support high-quality education.

Ken Fisher explained, “We want all children in our community to have the same opportunities as our kids. That is why we’ve made a commitment to Measure E by contributing to the campaign.”

“Our community is so inspired by the Fisher’s commitment to our schools that we have already received over $10,000 in contributions toward the challenge grant.  Every single dollar will help us match this generous grant by June 8,” said Jayne Battey, the volunteer Fundraising Chair for Measure E.
